Prospective Clinical Program Applicants

Admission Requirements and Procedures

Students admitted to the Clinical Psychology Program must have strong research skills. In addition, it is expected that students will develop outstanding clinical skills. Students should be committed to the program's emphasis on developing outstanding clinical scientists who expect to make significant contributions to the field of clinical psychology. This is exemplified in the clinical science orientation of the program and its commitment to training of empirically-supported treatment modalities. Strongly considered in evaluating applications for admission are the student's research interests and career goals. Prospective students should be able to identify one or more members of the clinical faculty who could serve as their mentor based on mutual research interests.

Minimum criteria for admission are set by the Graduate School, the Department of Psychology, and the Clinical Program. These criteria include a bachelor's degree, an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 and a graduate GPA (if applicable) of at least 3.50. However, credentials of students enrolled in the program substantially exceed these minimum criteria. For details of applications, class size and makeup, please see the Admissions/Outcomes Data section below.

Students in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology may receive a Master's degree as part of their enrollment. This Master's degree is not intended to be a terminal degree and is not designed to meet requirements for licensure for clinical practice at the Master’s level.

Applicants to the Clinical Program should visit the department’s Graduate Applications webpage for required materials and instructions. The deadline for receipt of all application materials (including unofficial transcripts and letters of recommendation) is November 15.

For the Fall 2024 admissions cycle, GRE scores will be optional and, if submitted, will be considered as part of a holistic admissions process.  Interviews will be virtual.

Financial Aid

Upon admission to the program students are eligible for a variety of types of financial aid. These include teaching assistantships (students with masters degrees may teach their own course; those with the bachelor's degree assist a faculty member); research assistantships (awarded in a university-wide competition or through a faculty member's grant); and clinic assistantships through the Psychology Clinic. Coordination of assistantship applications by the Director of Clinical Training and the Associate Department Head permits the largest possible number of program students to receive assistantships. Over the past several years, 100% of incoming students have received an assistantship that includes a full waiver of tuition (see Admissions/Outcomes Data section for Financial Aid statistics and funding levels). The Department is committed to funding all students for a minimum of 4 years.

The Clinical Program also encourages and supports students in seeking funding through competitive scholarships, awards, and fellowships. In addition to external funding mechanisms (e.g., National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation), clinical graduate students also frequently apply for and receive funding through university-based scholarships and fellowships.

Students may also work directly with the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid (706-542-6147) for assistance in securing student loans.

During the period from 2007 - 2012 the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) was taken by 27 graduates of The University of Georgia Clinical Psychology Program with a 100% pass rate. Scores are reported by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB).

Recent predoctoral internship placements obtained by graduate students include Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Graduate School, Charleston Consortium Internship, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, and VA Medical Centers throughout the nation. Our students also obtain a wide variety of postdoctoral and faculty positions in VA Medical Centers, academic medical settings and hospitals, and tenure-track university settings.
