The University of Georgia Department of Psychology welcomed more than 400 graduating students to this year’s Convocation Ceremony. Nearly 3,000 family members, friends, faculty, staff, and supporters gathered at the Classic Center to celebrate the Class of 2026 as graduates marked the culmination of their time at UGA.  

The department welcomed alumna and Olympic medalist Maritza McClendon back to campus as the keynote speaker. A former UGA student-athlete and Olympic swimmer, McClendon reflected on the experiences that shaped her journey. Drawing from both her Olympic career and years of leadership experience, she reminded students that the ambitions that feel “crazy” are often the ones most worth chasing. 

The ceremony also featured remarks from student speaker Rebecca Kann, recipient of the William T. James Award for the department’s most outstanding senior major in psychology. Kann was recognized for her extensive undergraduate research, leadership, and academic achievement. She has been accepted at Lehigh University and will be pursuing a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. 

Department Head Dr. Malissa Clark welcomed graduates and guests while recognizing the many paths students took to reach graduation. During her remarks, Clark encouraged students to embrace uncertainty, reminding graduates that careers and lives rarely follow a straight line. Undergraduate Coordinator Dr. Trina Cyterski also recognized the resilience and accomplishments of the graduating class and reflected on the importance of using psychology to make a positive impact in the world. 

Congratulations to all graduates as they join the growing network of UGA Psychology alumni. The department wishes the Class of 2026 continued success in the exciting paths ahead.
